XILS-Lab
XILS-lab is a French music software company. They have created two software synthesizers that showcase the advancements in this field. These are truly 'second-generation' virtual analogs. Both have beautiful user interfaces that are a joy to work with and completely invite exploration and sound creation. The quality of the sound is unusually authentic. Mature software such as this encourages the exploration and sound development that originally excited me about synthesis and software like this is the reason why Analogue Planet is not strictly hardware-based. XILS-Lab is highly recommended!
Sonic Projects
Sonic Projects has painstakingly recreated the classic Oberheim OB-X in a VST plug-in called the 'OP-X'. Sonic Projects' synth has a big, bright sound that is made even more versatile by many of the thoughtful features they have programmed. As a long-time user of the Oberheim OB-Xa and OB-8 I can certainly appreciate the user interface of this soft-synth. The presets are great, and the user interface invites you to start creating (or re-creating) many signature Oberheim sounds. This is a software synthesizer that is endorsed by Analogue Planet, so you know it is worth checking out!

La Griff Outstanding guitar, bass and drum recordings. Dark and talented, and yet very approachable!
Native Instruments Some of the best soft synths in the industry, and customer support that I rely on. Very professional, but not too big to care about providing high-quality support. Well done, guys!
Ableton One of the most flexible DAWs for MIDI and audio. If you 'grew up' on loop-based drum machines and sequencers, this is the DAW to ease the transition into PC or Mac-based composing. I can't say enough good things about their customer service.

KORG and ROLAND should be here, as well as MOTU and NOVATION and E-MU, and several others are notably absent due to their demise (OBERHEIM, SIMMONS, CRUMAR, etc.). Unfortunately I have only used their products, and have not established both a professional and personal relationship with those organizations, so I cannot comment, except provide my endorsement through ownership (see Analogue Planet's equipment list).
